Creative Sewing Weekends

CREATIVE SEWING WEEKENDS 2019

22 - 24th March  and 27 – 29th September

22-24th March

From Log Cabin to Seminole and more - a strip along with Jennie Rayment!

Play with the wealth of designs, tinker with technique and get to understand the wondrous appeal of a wide variety of strip patchworks. Use up those Jelly Rolls, Barn Raise or Straight Furrow with Log Cabin, just streak along those seams like lightning. Super easy speedy sewing. Ideal for all.

Sew Successfully with Stretch Fabric with Wendy Gardiner

A stretch knit garment is so comfortable to wear and easy to sew – when you know how! Get to grips with stretch fabric and sew yourself a top, dress or skirt. Learn about fabric and pattern choice, which needle and foot to use, different seams, finishing and hemming methods and then make and fit your chosen pattern so that you can go home not only wearing a new garment but armed with the knowledge to sew stretchy fabrics with confidence.

Jacket Masterclass with Lorna Knight

Bring a jacket pattern of your choice and spend the first part of the weekend making a quick toile and getting the fit right before starting to make it up in your chosen fabric. Lorna will provide the expert guidance all along the way, including tips and helpful advice on choosing and using the right mix of interfacings. NB: You may not get the jacket finished in the weekend, but you will go away confident to complete it at home.

27th – 29th September

Somerset to Cathedral Windows, Puffs and Prairie Points with Jennie Rayment

A compendium of traditional patchwork techniques. Roll a few folds, insert a smart edging, try a little stuffing perhaps add some Clamshells. A veritable feast of shape, form and ingenious designs. Hand sewing is welcome but the machine might be quicker. This is a class for all quirky quilters.

Dressmaking Portfolio Class with Wendy Gardiner

Create your own ‘book’ of essential samples during this dressmaking techniques class. We’ll look at understitch, stay and ease stitch, different seam neatening options, buttonholes including extra long buttonholes, creating perfect darts in all sorts of fabric, five hemming methods and three methods of zip insertion – creating samples at every stage. We’ll also take a look at Paper Patterns and just how much information they include to help with your choices. You will go away armed with your own sewing reference guide ready to tackle a number of dressmaking projects with confidence.

Machine Embroidery - Cutwork with Carolyn Sinclair

Embroidery machines and software give the ability to create beautiful cutwork embroidery which can have the traditional whitework look or a more contemporary feel. Recent versions of the embroidery software now have a cutwork feature within them and for all makes of embroidery machines cutting needles or a Bernina cutting tool are available, which replace the ordinary sewing needle and cut the fabric rather than stitching it.

You will learn how to use the software to design cutwork designs and how to use your embroidery machine to create amazing cutwork from cutting the fabric to embroidering it.  Designs will include traditional whitework cutwork, use of unusual fabrics, for example cork fabric, to create a contemporary feel and how to cut complex applique shapes accurately and easily as in the elephant hanging.
